‘Not to learn Irish is to miss the opportunity of understanding what life in this country has meant and could mean in a better future. It is to cut oneself off from ways of being at home. If we regard self-understanding, mutual understanding, imaginative enhancement, cultural diversity and a tolerant political atmosphere as desirable attainments, we should remember that a knowledge of the Irish language is an essential element in their realisation.’

Seamus Heaney

The Irish Medium Unit (IMU) in St Catherine’s College opened in 2002 to accommodate pupils in Armagh and the surrounding area who had attended Irish Medium Primary Schools.  It is a bilingual stream which caters for boys and girls aged 11 to 16 years old.  This year there are 147 pupils attending the IMU.  Pupils have come from the following primary schools this year: Christian Brothers’ Primary School, Armagh, St Francis’ Primary School, Lurgan, St John the Baptist Primary School, Portadown and St Patrick’s Primary School, Crossmaglen.  Nine teachers teach subjects through the medium of Irish at Key Stage 3 and five teach subjects through Irish at Key Stage 4.

Séamus Mac Dhaibhéid is Vice-Principal of the school and has specific responsibility for the IMU.  Caitríona de Bléine is the Co-ordinator of the IMU and Aisling Uí Choinn is Head of Pastoral Care in IMU.  Lorcán Ó Máirtín is Year Head for Key Stage 4 pupils and Nóra Uí Thománaigh is Year Head for pupils in Key Stage 3.  Síle Uí Dhuibh is employed as Development Officer and Síle is based in the IMU Office.

We recognise the need for continued support from and involvement with parents and guardians and welcome communication and co-operation with the parents of our pupils.  Further information on Pastoral Care is also available.

Please feel free to contact our IMU Office to make an enquiry or to request a meeting with a member of staff.

An Sruth Gaeilge offers pupils the chance to participate in various extra-curricular activities such as GAISCE, Irish Language Club and the boys’ daily lunchtime Sportszone, as well as enjoyable activities throughout the school year such as Irish Language Week.

Scéala Scoile, IMU’s magazine, gives an insight into life for IMU pupils.  Most recent editions are available online.

The Irish Language Committee at Coláiste Chaitríona was formed in 2013.  Year 13 and Year 14 pupils are on the committee.  They organise events and campaigns during the year to promote Irish throughout the school.  They play a central role in Irish Language Week.  For the past two years, they have succeeded in achieving the National Gaelbhratach award.  They travelled to Dublin and were presented with their prize by the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny.

IMU pupils have the opportunity to attend several trips throughout the year.

In February 2015 IMU pupils and staff spent 4 fun filled days in Barcelona.  They went shopping in Ramblas de Mer and La Boqueria and then took it easy in Parc Guell.  They enjoyed visiting Nou Camp, Montjuic, the Aquarium, a Flamenco show and more!  It was a wonderful opportunity for them to use their Spanish and to experience Spanish culture.

In March 2014 IMU pupils and staff enjoyed their trip to Liverpool.  They saw the sights and attended an Everton v Swansea soccer match.

Every year, Year 10 pupils take part in the Gael Linn Junior Quiz and Year 11 pupils take part in the Gael Linn Senior Quiz.  It is a great opportunity to meet up with other young Irish speakers, and they have fun participating in the table quiz and céilí and music which follow.

Our Year 8 pupils enjoy the workshops and concert organised by Gael Linn as part of the William Kennedy Piping Festival.  They have fun meeting other pupils studying through Irish at secondary level and learning about Scottish and Irish music, drama and language.

IMU pupils participate in Feis Ard Mhacha.  They can recite poetry, tell a story, give a speech and apply for a Gaeltacht Scholarship.  It is a great opportunity to improve their confidence and spoken Irish and gain experience in Public Speaking.

When pupils finish KS3 they celebrate as a class with a trip away.  In recent years they have travelled to Dublin and visited Glasnevin Cemetry and to Craigavon Watersports Centre.

Our pupils are also encouraged to take an active part in Irish language events in the community.  Pupils participate in activities in conjunction with Gael Linn, Cairde Teo. and other groups.
